TMJ / Jaw Massage

TMJ syndrome refers to a cluster of symptoms caused by a dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone).

Symptoms of disorder with this joint can be:

  •     Jaw pain and tenderness / Jaw clenching / Bruxism (tooth grinding)
  •     Trismus (difficulty opening mouth normally)
  •   Chronic headaches/migraines
  •  Tinnitus / undiagnosed ear pain
  •   Dizzy spells
  •   Tightness in the shoulders and neck
  •  Sensitivity to light and noise, difficulty sleeping, visual disturbances

It has been estimated that 1 in 4 of us suffer from a disorder of this highly used joint, and while the first port of call would usually be a doctor or a dentist, the treatment options either professional can provide are quite limited. A massage therapist is however able to treat the fascial restrictions and trigger points that may be the cause of the disorder, effectively reducing both symptom and cause.

A TMJ treatment begins with a consultation and assessment of the jaw. The work we do will then depend on your condition, but will likely include a combination of soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy and fascial release. If appropriate, some intra-oral work may be used – and this will be discussed with you during the appointment.

Treating TMJ disorder in a gentle holistic way avoids the need to undergo invasive and often traumatic work at the dentist, and clients often experience a reduction in symptoms after the first treatment,  with real progress made after 3-4 sessions.
